This fascinating castle has dominated Lancaster for almost 1000 years and is one of the best preserved and hardest working castles in the country. Discover one of the most important historic monuments in the Northwest. Shire Hall which was built in 1802, has displays of heraldic shields and the Grand Jury room has a collection of Gillow furniture. There is also a Crown Court and some medieval dungeons. The notorious Pendle Witches trial also took place at the castle. Public tours of the Lancaster Castle is kept to a minimum with its towers, battlements and dungeons is still being off limits to visitors, due to the fact it is still being used as a HM prison since at least 1196.
