Google UK has become the most widely used search engine in the United Kingdom since 1998. Google is also one of the main search engine to use by ISP's, Other Directories and Portals such as AOL and Netscape Search, Wanadoo, and BBCi. Google's 'url popularity' as a key element impacting search rankings. Google PageRank™, was developed by Google's Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University to make it easier to find high-quality information on the web. Page Rank is a core indicator of how a site may perform in the search results, based on both internal and external factors on a website. It is now the undisputed leader in terms of search traffic and the most important search tool for users.

MSN which stands for MircoSoft Network is a collection of internet services including Hotmail, provided by Microsoft Coropration. MSN web portal has always provided a search service to users but for many years its search database was created and provided by third parties such as Google, and Inktomi. Mircosoft have been quite slow developing a search engine service themselves. Mircosoft finally launched its own search engine in the spring of 2005. The MSN search engine provides some decent search results with a database frequently updated, but it is based on the Google model. MSN Search UK is the second most popular search tool in the United Kingdom next to Google.

Yahoo! is the third largest search engine in the UK. Yahoo! at one time was the largest and most important leading online portal on the internet and developed a range of services to users including a directory, free email, shopping and news services. Yahoo! had a search engine was supplement to the exisiting directory and search results were out sourced from Inktomi, and Google. Yahoo! went through a significant evolution process, when Yahoo! acquired Inktomi along with AltaVista, AlltheWeb, and Overture in 2004. Yahoo! is trying to establish a stronger presence by developing superior search engine with technology from its other search companies it aqcuired.

Ask search engine holds a small share of the search market compared to Google and Yahoo!, and the company is significant search engine worldwide. Ask was originally launched under the Ask Jeeves search engine name. The Jeeves the butler was finally dropped from the name in early 2006 in a attempt to gain more search market share from the other search engines. When Ask Jeeves was re-launched as ASK in 2006, the Teoma search engine acquired by ASK in 2002, was fully absorbed into ASK and no longer exists. Ask.com became focused on helping users search the information they need to find and do whatever they needed at lighting speed.
